Meet Anton Evans

Anton Evans is on his way to becoming an audio recording engineer, and he credits two supportive programs offered by ߲Ƶ in helping him to make his dream a reality.

Diploma in Audio Engineering

During his time at OC, Evans has been a student of the Preparing for Access to Careers and Education (PACE) and Supported Access to Modified Education (SAME) programs, both of which are geared at supporting students to achieve their own educational, vocational and personal development goals.

PACE helps students develop work readiness skills, learning communication, assertiveness, stress management and conflict resolution. Students also complete one work placement, supporting them to achieve real-world experience. 

Evans is currently enrolled in the SAME Program, which is an Adult Special Education program that focuses on enabling students with diverse abilities, who cannot meet the entry criteria for regular programs to develop skills specific to their chosen field. 

For Evans, a little support goes a long way once he entered the Audio Engineering program in Kelowna after completing the PACE program in Penticton. OC Life  caught up with Evans in between classes.

Q: Where is your hometown?
A: All over the south Okanagan. I’ve lived in Powell River, Princeton, and just outside of Oliver. My favourite place was Penticton.

Q: How did you end up at ߲Ƶ? 
A: I started at the PACE program in Penticton and ended up coming to Kelowna because they offer the Audio Engineering program.

Q: How did you choose your program/major? 
A: I took a lot of time to consider what I wanted to do. I didn’t want an office job where I would end up going to the same place every day. I like to travel and I enjoy music, so it seemed like a good fit.

Q: Best OC experience? 
A: Having support available, especially the ASE staff. The Audio Engineering department also put on a concert this year at the Mary Irwin Theatre. We hosted many different live bands and named it Amplitude.

Q: Advice for future OC students?
A: Don’t just take a course, figure out exactly what you want to take. It is important to research before you start, and have experiences to lead you in the right direction.

Q: What will you be doing in ten years? 
A: Traveling. I want to travel with a band and be their main sound engineer. I would love to tour in Japan, Fiji and Nashville.

Q: Where are you the happiest?
A: In the classroom. The students are really fun to be around and I really like the instructor, Corey Bell.

Q: What matters most to you right now? 
A: Happiness. Finding what makes me happy and doing more of those things.

Q: If you ran the world?  
A: I would start many environmental initiatives including having no gas vehicles by 2025. Also, every national anthem would have a banjo included in it.

Supported Access to Modified Education (SAME) program

The Supported Access to Modified Education (SAME) is Adult Special Education program that focuses on enabling students with diverse abilities, who cannot meet the entry criteria for regular programs to develop skills specific to their chosen field. The SAME program is based on values that assume all students, regardless of their differences, have a right to:

●    Choose their own personal, vocational and educational goals
●    Participate in a range of educational opportunities
●    Participate in valued work
●    Be supported in the process of identifying & achieving goals
●    Be treated with respect and dignity
